Building a career in business journalism

tuesday, sept 28, 2021 • 12 pm – 1 pm ET

It takes practice, skill, and persistence to become a successful business journalist. It also takes a supportive and encouraging network of peers, colleagues, sponsors, and mentors, who can help you navigate the industry. In our final business journalism webinar, panelists will share who helped them get to where they are today, and how they discovered and grew those relationships. We’ll learn about the different kinds of roles people can play in your “career community,” and how those people can help you figure out what steps you need to take as you’re starting your career, from the kind of job you take, to building your skillset, to avoiding burnout.

A better kind of business journalism

This seminar is part of a series of discussions hosted by Quartz on the fundamentals of business journalism, how the industry is changing, and the ways it could become more accessible to both journalists and readers. The goal of the series is to invite media professionals with a range of backgrounds and career experiences to share their thoughts on the industry with those just starting out. Previous webinars have covered business journalism as a career choice, fundamental skills, and creative and inclusive approaches to finding business stories.
